"The Strut is supposed to be centered when fully extended. If it is not or is
not able it is wrong, and unsafe in the retraction cycle.  Not what it was
designed to do.  "

 

Not all struts have self centering.  This feature was added several years into production.  It is actually easier to check the shimmy damper on the original struts since it does not need to be compressed.
