If a piston engine sustains a prop strike (even running through high
grass or deep water can constitute a prop strike),  the engine does not
have to be overhauled.  However, it does have to be inspected to
determine if damage has occurred to any rotating part.  This includes
prop governor and magnetos (because of the sensitive nylon gears inside).

When a Continental engine comes apart for this inspection, the crankshaft
has to be magnaflux tested and ultrasonic tested.  Common items found
during such an inspection are: cracked crankshaft, bent crankshaft (they
can be straightened if they are within certain limits), cracked case
(repairable most of the time), and broken gears.

Not cheap, but recoverable.
