John -

You may want to wait a little bit. Amazon just brought out the Kindle DX today. It is a larger screen than their earlier model and the Kindle 2 that  was launched earlier this year. The DX will also read .pdf files. Maybe John Lemberger could adapt his system to this box. I looked at the Sony and the screen is a bit small if you have the reader too far away (full plate in view). If you split it on the Sony to see it betetr, you have to scroll/tap to see the other part of the plate - if I remember it correctly. The price of the DX is higher than the Sony - $489. That may be a deal breaker to the average person, but for us airplane drivers, it is just another toy. :-))

Doug.

I asked my wife if she wanted a Sony Reader PRS-505 and ³Reader Plates² for
Motherıs  Day.  She told me ³fine,² and to do whatever the heck I wanted.
So Iım off to the store to pick up her Motherıs day present.  I know she is
excited about this gift.   I appreciate your help in managing yet another
potentially sensitive state mandated holiday.  Looks like Iım good for this
one.

Thanks again.

I have been searching for a while for a good solution for approach plates.  I
think I have found it.

My wife and I travel cross country quite a bit.  We used to purchase all the
paper plates for all the states we were going to fly over. This gave us a big
stack of paper at a not insignificant cost.  It was not convenient to store
the plates in the back of a Legacy and to reach around to find the proper book
at the proper time.  And sometimes there was a mad dash to rush order the
proper plates just days before our trip.

I tried Pocket Plates on an iPaq and although the software was good, I didn't
like the screen size.  I was contemplating getting a tablet PC, but with a
solid state drive and a daylight readable screen these are not cheap.  They
are also fairly bulky.

I came across ReaderPlates (http://www.readerplates.com/) which seemed like a
good idea and got a demo from the owner, John Lemberger at Sun n Fun.  I ended
up purchasing the Sony Reader (PRS-505) for $270 and the software for $9.99
per month.

John gave me considerable help setting up my system (needed because of a
strangely formatted 8 GB SD card I had put in it) and it is now running well.
The reader is small, light and daylight viewable.  I am going to try to put my
checklists on it and as a bonus, I can always use it as a book reader.
