Neal,
Thanks for the detail, It has been a couple of years since I investigated and changed my Vernatherm for similar reasons - high oil temps. Testing of the "old" one found its movement very sluggish and a failure to fully extend. The new one changed its length over a broader temperature range, although I admit I don't remember the exact range.
Additionally, my installation includes an Airwolf remote filter adapter that holds both the Vernatherm and the temperature probe. I use AeroShell 15W50.
However, all theory and operational design aside, a Lancair 360 owner (LyCon engine) in SW Wisconsin and myself in NE Illinois have very efficient airflow thru oil cooler designs including a dedicated NACA duct for inlet air. In addition, I am using the smaller Stewart Warner cooler on my 320 (Lancair recomends the larger cooler). We have had trouble keeping the oil temp up around 180 degrees in the winter and both of us now use cockpit controllable air doors on the cooler air inlet to solve that problem. In the summer I see 180F in cruise, and no more than 200F in climb or, more likely, descent to land and post flight taxi. Scott Krueger
