I used System III water soluble primer on my 235 with good results. It
goes on well with a roller and fills and sands easily. I made sample runs
of the top paint on the bottom side of the seat pans and determined that my
paint gun skill was not up to doing an acceptable job for the whole plane.
The problem was my skill not the paint.
When I tried to find a professional who would spray on System III final
paint I got zero results. No aircraft painter in the Arizona area would put
the paint in his equipment. I think this was more due to small size of the
job and the ease of getting all the spam can paint work they wanted, than to
anything specific about the System III paint. None of the painters I talked
to had ever used water soluble paint and had little incentive to mess with
it now. Ultimately, after a good sanding, conventional auto primer and
paint was put on. It is now 1 1/2 years old and has had no problems.
There is a builder in Tucson who has put this paint on a fabric airplane by
hand with a brush. The job looks great but he says never, never again
because of the huge number of man-hours involved.
I have also used this paint on wooden boats using rollers and brushes with a
finish satisfactory for boats but not up to a classy finish suitable for a
