On my first ES, I used the factory-recommended WLS primer on the rudder
and a couple of other skins, applying it with a roller, as they recommend.
After sanding for what seemed like several thousand hours, I tried the stuff
with a sprayer. I got nice results, but again spent what seemed like a
lifetime sanding the stuff. The WLS primer is VERY hard, and therefore
difficult to sand. When I visited the factory, I found that even the
Lancair guys don't all use it -- Orin was just finishing his T360 with a PPG
system.
Finally I settled on DuPont Corlar, which was a compromise. It's a good
quality primer, relatively easy to sand but a little light on the fill
solids; i.e., it probably took more coats to fill than some other systems
might. This time, my spiffy new HVLP sprayer system in hand, I'm going to
try the Poly Fiber system. From cruising the auto body world, it's apparent
that water-based systems are the future, both to save our livers, the
atmosphere, and the hassle of dealing with the EPA. The quantity of toxic
solvents released by the conventional paint systems is really horrific.
Any additional feedback from users of the Poly Fiber system would be of
interest. It seems that using water-based systems requires a little
different mindset, as well as a different bag of spray tricks.
