Roger:
I looked at the development of the Deltahawk diesel for five or six
years and put down a deposit. They unquestionably have a fine engine
design. The trouble then was that the engine, which used a bed mount, had
to be installed inverted requiring an over arching sort of mount structure.
All of the 360's firewall hard points are on the lower half of the firewall.
We tried to design an engine mount that would work but discovered it would
require a very complicated structure with lots of curved load paths that
would flex under use and thus fatigue. Deltahawk was considering a
dynafocal mount for their engines but until they cast the aft part of the
block for a dynafocal configuration there really is no way to easily
integrate that engine into the LNC2. I don't think I would have been happy
with the resulting over the nose visibility if I had been able to come up
with my own mount. Deltahawk graciously refunded my $5K deposit. The
Legacy firewall may be more forgiving for a Deltahawk installation. Then
there is the fact that the FAA is considering a requirement that boosts the
structural strength requirements for diesel engine mounts by a factor of 4X
to account for torque reaction loads in the event of sudden stoppage. Best regards, Pete Field
