Yep. Everyone should understand what
data is actually being presented to them.
Wikipedia has a good article on NEXRAD.
While NEXRAD can pick up precipitation, it also picks up wind activity which
often precedes cloud formation (particularly vertical movement).
If you are flying IFR and fly through rain
not on the NEXRAD (presuming you are in a covered area), chances are it will not
be violent - but there is no guarantee.

I've attached an image that I pulled up from AccuWeather.com this morning
about 7:00 local. This is very similar to what I was seeing on the 496
last Friday. As you can see from the satellite image, not a cloud in the
sky. So it sounds like my 496 is working fine, just a glitch in the NEXRAD
technology. Still looking out the windshield!
