Does anyone know if the plane needs weight on the nose
gear to complete this test? If not it can be done
while doing a gear retraction test while on the jacks.
It only requires that you twist the gear left and
right then see if it self centers. Or, am I missing
something here?

anti-shimmy damper. The assembly manual says to use
two steel plates with grease between them. Set the
nose wheel on top of the plates and twist the nose
wheel left and right to feel for the correct
resistance.
I didn't have a couple of steel plates, but I did
have a lazy susan bearing similar to one of these:

You can probably get them at your local big box home
improvement store or hardware store. I used a 6"
one because that's what I had. I screwed a 1.5"
thick piece of wood to the top side of the bearing,
about the size of the bearing's base. I set the
bearing directly on the hangar floor and lowered the
nose wheel on top of the wood. A simple, quick, and
clean method of testing the anti-shimmy damper!
