Running with the mag off could very well cause bigger problems than it
solves. With a single ignition point, the flame has to travel a greater distance
across the combustion chamber to complete the burn. This results in part of the
fuel charge existing for a longer period of time at elevated temperature and
pressure, which may very well yield detonation. Detonation can damage the engine
by itself over time or may lead to preignition which will destroy it in
short order.
Also, from a performance stand point, you want the fuel charge to combust
in the shortest time possible. You may recover some power by advancing the
ignition some on one plug, but this probably won't return performance to the two
plug condition.
