Don't do it, Earl (take a chance on the old rig, that is). too many folks have had to buy new props, as a minimum, when the old nose gear shimmied itself right off the airplane! After seeing the results on Jim Gates' N320JG, I didn't even try to use the old strut. Six months before I flew, I changed to the newer nose strut and I haven't been sorry once! Jim even found that the engine mount sustained a crack from the violent shimmy. Jim is based in Torrance, CA and did his test flying at Camarillo, Ca. There is a long scar on the runway there where he ground down his old strut (and his propeller) when it failed in catastrophic fashion. If you can get the new strut at a good price, do it! If you have to pay the factory full price for one, do it! After all those years of sweat and tears building your Lancair, one landing with the bolt tension set a little off and there's no telling how long it'll take to fix your airplane. And there's no telling what it'll do to your engine when the prop starts getting real short.
