Scott, if you've got a "Shower of Sparks" starter system rather than impulse
couplings on at least one of your Magnetos, you must use the vibrator (or
equivalent). The newer Slick mags are available with and without impulse
couplers and it's usual, when using the "standard" starter key-switch, to
use a mag with an impulse coupling on the Left mag position. In that case,
you don't require the vibrator since the impulse coupling will provide a hot
spark at the low cranking speeds occurring during the start sequence.

Either system will start your engine, whether you need a vibrator depends on
which system is installed on your engine.
