Yes, mirror and light inside the tank, which surface is as black as coal, produced only frustration.  I might try a very small amount of gas, to see if it comes out the lower vent line. Thanks for the feedback.

Yes, it is very dark in there.  The factory recommended and supplied tank sealer at the time was a real dark brown color.  The 'promo' for it said, "smells bad, works good".  It smelled like rotten eggs. 
 
And the required primer utilized prior to the installation of the dark brown tank sealer was bright orange in color and had a very intensive chemical lacquer thinner/acetone/MEK type of odor that would probably kill every living creature (probably including cock roaches) in the shop.
