The check valve I referred to is in the engine fuel pump.  The same check valve comes into play so boost fuel pressure to the system can by-pass the engine driven fuel pump during engine starting.  While I do not have any first hand experience with and engine pump failure, I would expect you would want to plan on using the red knob.  However, a poorly running engine needing mixture control is more desirable to me than a glider.

The fuel system on the TSIO550 is designed to allow high boost from an auxiliary pump to be used as a back up for engine pump failure.  There is a check valve in the system for this purpose.
