Based on my understanding of what Dan Newlan says,
the open cell would only deal with ambient noise that had already penetrated the
cabin. The other two pieces are dampening, which uses a visco-elastic
materal to actually reduce vibration of the skin and sealing/barrier which
prevents sound from crossing into the cabin. My amateurish
explanation. ....but I strongly suggest anyone thinking seriously
about sound proofing talk to Dan first.
I bought the same soundproofing kit from Lancair
that Bryan did and my interior installer told me not to use it. He
said it was all open cell foam, which will, over time, dry up and slowly
disintigrate into powder. He put in closed cell foam. Between the
cost of the stuff and shipping (it's HEAVY), it was a total waste of a pretty
good chunk of change.
