Aircraft: King LANCAIR 235/320, registration: N717SK Injuries: 1 Uninjured. This is preliminary information, subject to change, and may contain errors. Any errors in this report will be corrected when the final report has been completed.
On December 12, 1999, at 1750 central standard time, a King Lancair 235/320 amateur-built experimental airplane, N717SK, owned and operated by the pilot, was substantially damaged during a forced landing following the separation of the propeller near Sterling City, Texas. The instrument rated private pilot, sole occupant of the airplane, was not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and an IFR flight plan was filed for the 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. The cross-country flight originated from Kerrville, Texas, at 1624, with Big Spring, Texas, as its destination. The pilot reported that while being radar vectored at 12,000 feet msl, he felt a vibration and smelled an odor which resembled wire burning. He contacted Fort Worth Center and obtained a clearance to descend to 6,500 feet. The pilot reduced throttle and the vibration decreased. While leveling off at 6,500 feet, the propeller separated from the engine and a forced landing was initiated to a road. During the approach the aircraft impacted a power line and touched down on the shoulder of the road and "bounced." The right wing struck a sign, and the airplane crossed the road and traveled through a ravine before coming to a stop. The pilot further reported that the right wing was separated from the fuselage, and the left main landing gear was shoved up into the wing.
