When the compressed air goes to ambient pressutre it is no different than the reduced pressure air surrounding you which provides inadequate oxygen. Breathing pure oxygen at altitude compensates your oxygen supply by altering the normal 80/20 mix of nitrogen and oxygen. Witrhout adequate oxygen you die.
