I think, if you have VOR on your radio, like a Garmin SL-30 Nav/Com. you can be TSO-145a compliant for IFR.
From what I have heard, the 1101 and 1201 are the same unit performance wise. The 1201 just cost more because it is certified. (But it may have only been certified to be used in a particular plane)?
