Colyn I agree with you, but maybe I am missing something. If say my
main alt craps out. I wouldn't loose power to the bus. The battery
should take over and I would have time to hit the cross-tie. I
wouldn't think anything would reboot?

micro-processors have an ugly habit of rebooting when you remove power, even
for a moment.
cross-tie doesn't help that problem. by the time you turn on the cross-tie
you are looking at seconds to minutes to get back whatever function those
micro-processors were doing.
so you end up with some sort of diode setup. ...which will end up being 2
diodes per important box or
2 diodes per essential bus.
automatic also useful when you are in a high workload situation, which you
would be.
