Rick,

I put a permanent magnet Sky-Tec starter on my plane in 2000. The starter now has 7 years and 1000 hours on it. The other day I flooded my engine and tried to start it for 20 seconds. The engine spun like a turbine. I don't normally see this because it almost always starts on the 1st or 2nd blade.

I have a 4 year old BC-100 (Odyssey) 25 amp hr battery. My battery has about a 10 ft run of aluminum cable. I am not sure of the size.

In the 2 years that I owned the plane before this starter and battery, I had put in 2 Gills and 1 Concorde battery and hand propped the engine about 50 times.

I am not going back.

I currently have a std continental starter, as I’ve heard “mixed” comments on the lightweight, permanent magnet starters (high current draw and reduced gear durability).  Any comments from folks on those?
