My understanding is that the "Continental Starter" is actually an ISKRA starter
and that this starter has been causing problems.  Sorry I can't give any more
specific info than that.

I was scheduled to have the ISKRA starter put on my engine but due to the advice
of Tim Ong and Allen Barrett will be using another starter.

I have also heard that Continental has stopped using the ISKRA, but has not
recalled those engines with ISKRAs already installed.

I had the lightweight starter on my TSIO550, but when the plane went
back to Performance because of metal on the oil screen, they not only
fixed the rocker that was generating metal but also changed out the
starter.  They said that it was because they too had seen problems when
used with these big engines, and an inspection did show some gear wear.
I had 50 hrs on the engine at the time.  Robert M. Simon

I currently have a std continental starter, as I've heard "mixed"
comments on the lightweight, permanent magnet starters (high current
draw and reduced gear durability).  Any comments from folks on those?  --
