Bill & John

I have a Motion Computing 1500 tablet running windows XP for tablet. I currently am using the Voyager system for planning, inflight and instrument procedures. I also have XM weather. Both the weather and GPS are blue toothed to the tablet and this is a troublesome thing. Bluetooth is squirrely and you often have to turn off the wx receiver and/or gps bug to get back to normal. However, it has been more reliable because I found that turning off the built-in wireless capability makes the blue tooth work better.

Of course, the tablet has a spinning hard drive, so one has to watch the cruise altitude. Motion is very clear now  about the HD becuse they have set an operating altitude of less than 10,000'.

Voyager is a very good package, but is inordinately complicated. Thus the learning curve is quite high. I do not have their weather module because the tablet came with the XM software. I am just now beginning to fly a lot of cross countries and the package has worked most of the time. I do not spend much time in flight using it to navigate. The Garmin 480 is so capable and awesome that I use the tablet as a backup and to get a good handle on the weather. I also have Microsoft Streets and Trips that uses the same GPS. That works very well and my wife likes to compare the flight maps to the road maps. Another good feature, and something I amnot beginning to use on an approach is that the approach plates have the GPS position overlayed - a good cross check to the 480 and also a very large, readable plate is on you lap for the vertical info/profile.

I switched to Voyager from another package that was not very good. I think I will renew the Voyager for at least another year. One thing about Voyager: it is heavily tied to the internet for updates & planning. You simply must have access to the net (wireless or rj 45 jack to the wall) to get the most out of it. I'm not sure that every little airport has this access.

If you are interested, Voyager has a 30 trial period that is free. But you had better have time to get a good handle on the soare and then to fly with it to get comfortable.

Cheers,

I too have been deferring the EFB decision.  I did go so far as to
purchase a Fujitsu tablet and I am just about ready to give up on
getting the free "PocketFMS" software to work..

I have been looking at the Chartcase Professional at $ 400 with $ 300
yearly updates.  I am looking for some pros and cons, opinions, etc.

Maybe this might promote a discussion.  Regards, Bill Hogarty
