Calibrated airspeed is equal to true airspeed in standard atmosphere at sea level. I would bet your LNC2 would have a higher TAS than 180knots at sea level. I have seen several LNC4's with 3" numbers too, and they will eventually be grounded until the numbers are made to 12". It's pretty clear in the FARs, and would not be worth it to me to have to re-paint it. I'm planning my ES paint scheme with 12" numbers for sure. One other thing about the smaller numbers is that, you cannot fly in an ADIZ zone with less than 12" numbers, so you cannot fly outside the US without them. Of course I've seen guys tape 12" numbers on the fusleage to fly to the Bahamas, and then take them off later, and this works fine.
