Many questions about the Cg were answered for me by Orin at Sun n'Fun a couple of years ago.The first came in regards to the placement of the hydraulic pump.I had a great deal of trouble trying to mount the pump behind the baggage bulkhead .I saw a 360 from Dalton,GA. with an access door on the right side of the fuselage (exactly where the pump would be) and asked Orin if he thought that it might compromise the integrity of the fuselage. He offered what I thought to be a more workable solution---make a vertical bulkhead behind the seats and place the pump on the forward face of the passenger side.I not only put the pump there but also the battery(pilots side ) and then made both seat backs removeable.I have the old flap bellcrank system but encountered no spacing problems.Further data--I am 6'2" tall and weigh 207(pre holiday weight!!).The A/C has the Mark II tail with an IO-360.long engine mount and CS Hartzell, finished empty weight of 1172#.With pilot and full header tank the CG is at the 23.5" mark and with full fuel, passenger(read wife @135 plus 60# of baggage the aft CG is still a full 1 1/2" forward of the aft CG limit. Plenty of elevator and trim authority during landings.
The cowl supplied with my kit (NOV.96) was less than I had anticipated.I worked around the flimsiness by installing 1/4" foam with 1 bid inside the cowl.Be sure to leave the foam off the areas where the baffling and the fuel spider reside. This foam reinforcement was done to both upper and lower cowls. As an aside do not try for zero gap fitment between the cowl and the header tank area --many ons and offs will cause "chips" to fly! Suggest a small gap as well as some rounding of the sharp edges of the cowl and header tank gap. Without these reinforcements you will probably get the proverbial "oil can" effect.
