We had a case problem and they found the cam was bad so it turned into a complete overhaul except for the cylinders which they said were in very good condition. I just looked at their hand written entry which they want me to paste into the engine log book. Besides a few words about the "repair", ADs and SB's complied with, there is an additional note: "This Engine Is For Experimental Use Only". What is this all about? I remember a few years back there was talk of requiring data plates be removed from any engine that was in an experimental to keep them from ever being used again in a certified airplane. I don't recall anything ever coming of this. Has Mattituck taken their CYA to a new level? We did have issues with their original estimate which had them replacing many parts just because they do even if they are well within the Lycoming specs. Since this wasn't a zero time SMOH job - it was a repair - they agreed that some of the items could be put back in no problem. It shouldn't make any difference if the engine was from an experimental or not or if it was going back into an experimental or a certified airplane, the engine was repaired according to Lycoming's specifications. Why should the engine be labeled "Experimental" now? Anyone ever hear of this? They are only "words" in the engine log, but they bother me. I will call them in the morning.
