In the decision process for our panel at
Airventure this year I was concerned about the Trutrak ADI as a Chelton
backup. I posed the reliability question to Jim Younkin the design
engineer who happens to have a Chelton in his RV10. He said the
reliability of their ADI with the Backup Battery is “one of the most
reliable instruments he is aware of”.
Considering Jim’s background, that
is a powerful statement. Also consider he knew I was a prospect for a
Sorcerer AP and is no doubt biased. I bought the ADI with the Backup Battery
and the Sorcerer.
Maybe the answer is a backup for the
backup…..I have a Garmin 396 and have practiced with the AI enough to
know it works. If the backup to the backup fails? To quote Marlon
Brando, “it’s not your night”.
