Scott, etal,

I did a quick check (and a few fixes) of my DB queries.

Attached is an XLS extract from my FAA DB extract (so folks check/analyze it themselves).  The xls has four tables 1) the summary counts, 2) the detail listing of all lancairs, 3) the turbines only, and 4) a listing by faa MFGYEAR.  The #2) detail sheet is sorted by family and serial number (zserial2).  You can re-sort it as you want.  zserial2 is my quick attempt to interpret the actual Lancair Kit serial#  where possible.

This extract includes everything I found.  Some have A/Wdates, some do not.  This is a little confusing to me, because I do not know how you register an aircraft without an airworthiness inspection.  Note: I know how to “reserve” an N-number and those are not included here, as the faa reservation process does not include make/model information.  You can check it yourself – my reserved number is N727RT.  It can be found in the FAA online web search, but was excluded from the extract since the reservation process does not have a field for make/model.  In looking at the date fields, obviously, there appears to be some “messiness/inconsistency” in the data (especially the dates).

I used two methods for determining a IV-turbine.  Either the NAME mentioned turbine or the faa ENGINE field indicated turbine.  Given that either could be wrong/incomplete, I used both.  In total, I now show 49 turbines, 29 with airworthiness dates.  That would tend to drive to the conclusion that turbines are (approximately ) no less likely to crash than IV’s (based on prior posts).

There are also a fair number of records in the FAA database without Registration numbers.  These show up on my extract starting with zzz in the N-number field.  I’m guessing these were either de-registered and/or were duplicates in the FAA make/model table.  Not surprised that the Gov is a bit “messed-up”.

For anyone interested, FAA certification code “42” is experimental/amateur-built.  If you look through the data, there are actually a couple Lancairs with a “11” code which are certified in the “Standard/Normal” category  (wow - I guess those couple can legally land anywhere in Southern Calif - LOL).

PLEASE HELP:

For anyone who wants to look up your own plane and email me (off list) with updates, I’ll compile those while eating turkey and watching football next week – and get a revised list out to all.  Would love to confirm flight status and (approx) first flight date if possible.

KimL/TimO, - I believe you also have a (company) list.  Any interest in reconciling?  (perhaps by N-Number if name etc is perceived to be too private).

Subject: [LML] NTSB Accident Counts

Using the NTSB database there have been 61 Lancair accidents since 1/1/2001.

Searching from 1990 forward, there were 105 Lancair accidents (43 fatal).  While the following breakdowns don't quite add up (101 vs 105), they are useful:

Lancair IV................9

Lancair IVP............18

Lancair IVPT............3

Lancair Legacy........6

Lancair 320............22

Lancair 360............20

Lancair 235............20

Lancair 200..............1

Lancair ES..............2

----------------------------------------

total.....................101

105/1052 = 10%  (fatals added to total Lancairs since the registration was probably removed)

43/1052 = 4.1% of the accidents were fatal

Now, ignoring the fatals loss of registration and unaccounted for registrations, the percentages are inflated:

...IV 9/79 = 11.4%

IVP 18/207 = 8.7%

IVPT 3/16 = 18.8%

LEG 6/118 = 5.1%

..ES 2/58 = 3.4%

L320 22/212 = 10.4%

L360 20/123 = 16.3%

L235 20/99 = 20.2%

L200 1/6 = 16.7%
