I just addressed this issue last week before departing on my first long (1,000 nm) cross country flight.  My right stick was fine but the left one hit the fuselage.  Instead of cutting and rewelding it we adjusted the crossover shorter to cant both sticks inward, and then adjusted just the right stick back to where is was.  Bingo - both sticks clear and it took less than an hour.
