I came across LPE and Zehrbach via my interest in technology stocks and high altitude communications aircraft. A June 29/98 Aviation Week article showed a 55,000 ft/high altitude aircraft where in the body of the text it said the aircraft was powered by an LPE engine. Down the side of the aircraft behind the wing a great big "Powered by LPE" decal is on the aircraft. I called up the website at www.Platformsintl.com and under unmanned is a photo where you can start to see the red letters that were in the article photo. In stock investor brochures Platfors gave out the name of flight test engineer Rick Sargeant of Soarcraft Inc in Tehachapi Ca. Platforms also talked about huge drones that had operated out of Edwards AFB that were powered by LPE engines and wargames activity. In looking at high altitude possible investments I ran across Vela Technology whose articles indicated they were using Zehrbach engines like the ones in the 61,000 ft aircraft to power a manned platform up to a satellite missile launch altitude. I called info for Velas number at 703 242 1193. I was with a buddy looking for a big kit at Oshkosh. We talked to an kit manufacturer Eric Alstrom who was a strong advocate of the engines, has a 6 place kit with an LPE V8 and who is building a Reno racer around a 2,000 hp. LPE V12. Erics brochure gives 510 490 2592 and an e mail of AFE12@aol.com. We also talked to John Clark, the head of Bellanca Skyrocket who was impressed with Zehrbach and is having them build an engine for the Skyrocket. I also learned that the head of LPE also once owned or ran Helio Courier aircraft and that military bought some with a V8 in them for "dropping rice bags that clanked" that were super quiet. The best bet is just call LPE and ask for a brochure and references. I did when I called them and they gave me a whole list of references with testimonial letters etc (which I cannot seem to find today in the piles). The list even had letters from Ferrari in it with dyno tests and seemed quite willing to tell people contact info.
