There are a few pics of Bob Fair's FADEC installation at:

Bob sent the harness you saw back to http://www.fadec.com and they
designed a new harness without firewall plugs. http://rob.com/lancair/Others/Fair/

Vision Micro can now interface their VM1000 to the FADEC units

and http://sierraflightsystems.com require Aerosance's S)ingle B)oard C)omputer.
The SBC combines the 6 rs485 channels into an "engine wide" rs232 stream.
Currently there aren't many of these in the world, (three?) and the protocol is kinda strange so I doubt anyone has shipped anything. In the case of SFS
their EAU does the same kinda thing for analog motors. Greg  from
http://hometown.aol.com/enginfosys does the EAU software and will
be adding a SBC input so no software changes are required for the SFS. (SFS
does plan to accept SBC input, but their certified program is absorbing most of
their resources. Greg is the programmer to watch, even though he hasn't
started one line of code because there are no SBC.. :-(  plan on using
the only existing software that turns a laptop into a 485 bus master.

While there will be some data need by the VM1000 on the other side of the
 firewall (oil pressure and temp?)
most things come from the SBC, but plan on an external OAT and fuel probes.
also the install could use a fuel pump relay, and 6 cyl iodiot lights.

the advantages of FADEC are:
1) no mixture to adjust
2) each cly is independently monitored so it should be very smooth

disadvantages:
1) expect to run in best power mode unless lower then 2,300rpm
http://www.avweb.com/articles/pelperch/pelp0018.html
IO-550 std day WOT (recommended cruise 220hp)
alt   rpm   hp
8k 2300 210
3k 2300 245
8k 2500 220
3k 2500 265
2) no best economy mode above 75% rated HP
3) more wires. (yes, lots more)
4) FBO wouldn't have parts or know what to do with your motor.
5) at least $8k more, excluding SBC and extra wiring.
