Orin happened to be visiting San Diego at the time and stopped = by. He took one look at the seal and easily pulled the whole thing off = the door, telling me to clean up the mess (which was considerable) and = go get adhesive caulk. I put the seal back on with the adhesive and = it's held perfectly for three years now.
