Would you share with us the placements of the 8 other antennae?
Thanks,
Barry Knotts, LIV-P, Conti TSIO-550
Sure Barry, starting in the tail of our fiberglass 320;
1. Com antenna in the vertical stab (primary com)
2. VHF nav antenna in the horizontal stab, a splitter for the GS.
3. Transponder on the right side of the fuselage about 12 inches ahead of the h. stab leading edge (see below)
4. Marker beacon in the belly running from the baggage compt, under the baggage bulkhead into the aft fus.
5. StrikeFinder antenna beneath a flat ground plane hanging from the ceiling behind the baggage bulkhead.
6. Com Antenna (Bob Archer) in left wall of the baggage compt. (secondary com)
7. GPS on a little bracket just behind the canopy rollover at the highest point. (works great)
8. FM radio antenna horizontal on the floor at the right side of the nosegear tunnel.
9. Upper TCAD antenna, left side of the fuselage about 12 inches behind the firewall.
10. Lower TCAD antenna, right side of the fuselage about 12 inches behind the firewall.
My TCAD is an earlier Ryan model, 8800 I think. It gives distance and relative altitude but not direction. The antennae are transponder antennae, the ones made on the printed circuit board. Mounting them left and right instead of upper and lower has worked just fine. I doubt that this placement would work with the newer directional antennae.
All of these antennae are glassed onto the inside surfaces.
I just added a standard transponder antenna (3 inch stick with a ball on the end) sticking out of the belly under the passenger seat with a small ground plane on the floor. The internal one (#3 above) worked fine except when you were heading directly at the radar site).
The StrikeFinder doesn't work well in it's current position. It needs to be external on the belly with a big ground plane.
