I am using the "little black tape" system as you can see from my picture on LML attachment of 11/12/98. It is actually used on several of the "heavy" airplanes I have flown as a back-up system. After a couple of hundred hours on your plane you will know fairly well how long time you have to hit the switch for a certain amount of flaps, but I am still in the habit of glancing out the window to be assured.
