Angier Ames.

It IS normal for a continuous duty contactor to run too hot to touch.
  You can get both continuous or intermittant duty contactors in that
  package. Use an ohmmeter to measure the coil resistance of your
  unit. If it's over 10 ohms, then it is indeed a continuous duty
  device and uses about 10-15 watts of power to keep it closed . . .
  it WILL run pretty toasty.
