I was absolutely amazed at how strange Don’s plane looked sitting gear up amidst tall grass, almost perfectly in tact. With the help of several friends we raised the plane and lowered the gear, then removed the wings and towed the plane to my hangar. After we washed it down and dried it, you needed to take a second glance to tell that it had been damaged. My impression now more than ever is that this is one tough airframe. Don is ok with no physical injuries what-so-ever, but as you might expect he needs a few days to calm himself down after making an engine-out landing in some fairly inhospitable terrain. This morning we flew over the site and there is no doubt in my mind that Don flew a by-the-book emergency landing, exhibiting skill and focus that resulted in no injuries (he was the sole occupant) and little damage to is airplane. Don will be making a post to the LML in the next day or so with more details. I offered to make this initial posting at his request, because we all know that building and flying the Legacy is truly his passion, and he needs a few days to recover his composure before he can speak to our fellowship. I do ask that the members of the LML keep the chatter and speculation to a minimum until Don provides us, in his own words, the details of this unfortunate off-airport landing.
