Gentlemen, Anyone in need of lead may wish to check at any scrap metal yard. Driving to Arizona from Calif can't be a great use of one's time unless
absolutely necessary. As there is no need for virgin lead, the salvage
route would most likely be faster and cheaper. Lead is often turned in
at such places by construction crews in the normal course of their
business. When remodeling any health care facility, lead shielding will be a normal by-product along with copper, galvanized, and cast iron
piping. The crews routinely collect these "wastes" seperately and turn them in
for additional income. The salvage yards will be glad to sell you the
raw lead. You can then Recycle it by simply melting it down safely in a
lead pot...(hint. you can rent a lead pot for under $20.00 at any
construction equipment rental firm). Wear your goggles when re-melting
this material, and proceed slowly at a reasonable heat setting. You may
need to add some wax and/or antimony to make up for heating losses, but
these items are easily available, and can be minimized by SLOW heating
of the scrap. If you have any fishing activity in your area, ask the
older guys using sinkers for their sources...Sure beats a drive to
another State (of confusion?). Enjoy your building hours. Regards to all.... Jeffrey B. Chipetine
