How many of us select a good ol' boy at our home airport to do our BFR, knowing he won't work us too hard, maybe a couple steep turns, and a few landings?  I'm pretty sure I've had to simulate an engine failure and emergency landing on every BFR I've had.  Knowing how, maybe 15 years ago when you got your private ticket, and being able to go into the "Done this before" mode is the difference.  I don't think "Done this before" works for more than a year, maybe even less.
