The master could get warm, but not hot.  Are you sure it is not an intermittent duty relay?  It should be a continuous duty relay.

I held a Hydraulic system relay (intermittent) closed for about 2 hours and it got hot enough to melt the winding lacquer and other internal material which then caused the relay to be frozen in the closed position.
