To: Bob and those interested in REAL numbers:

Here are some numbers relative to a Lancair 320, IO 320 with 9:1 Pistons at various times as recorded from EPI 800 Instruments (assume Fuel flow is 10% high):

Note: Wings are 17Gal, Header is 9gals, Total=43 US GAL for those not using Imperial Gal.

LEG: KARR(Chicago-Aurora, IL) to KDBN(Barron, GA) enroute to Sun&Fun (Apr 99) avoiding storm area over KY and TN with some altitude changes and holds--
Over KIKK @7500 ft--
22.4", 2470 RPM, Oil temp 172, 350 CHT, 1350 EGT, 165 IAS, 187 TAS, 9.7 GPH

@ KDBN 4.25 Hrs flt time, 0 wing fuel, 6 gal in the header. EPI said I used 39.1 gal, 33.2 gals put into wings only.  If we assume actual 37 Gal, calculates to 8.1 GPH, Leaned to Approx 100 degrees ROP (rich of peak).

Last Fall's trip to KRDM(Redmond OR):

Leg: KARR to KPIR(Pierre, SD) Conducted at 6500ft:

167IAS, 186TAS, Oil T 185, CHT 370, EGT 1430, 23.3", 2500 RPM, 9.7 GPH (Indicated)
(This was consistent for this leg)

Leg time3.3 Hrs, 28.6 Gal added, EPI said 31 used.  Actual GPH = 8.6

KPIR to KBZN(Bozeman, MT) 1 hr at 8500, 2 hrs at 12,500:

@12500, 148IAS, 184TAS, Oil T 178, CHT 360, EGT 1380, 19", 2490 RPM, 8.1 GPH Indicated

Leg Time 3.2 Hrs, 24.1 Gal added, Fule Tot Indicated 26.  Actual GPH = 8.

KRDM to KGCC(Gilette, WY) Flown between 11500 and 13500:
@13500, 187TAS (Only recorded data)

Leg time 4.1 Hrs, Fuel tot indicated 34.2, actual, 32.1, Actual GPH= 7.8

KGCC to KARR @9500  IAS156, TAS 184, GS206 (at times).

Leg time 4.0 Hrs, Fuel tot indicated 36.4, actual=34, Actual GPH=8.4
Leg Length=765NM, GS=191.25Kts, 220MPH

I hope this sheds some light on real trips (I generally plan for 8.5 GPH) ....

I just finished reading Deakins AVWEB article, I could have gotten much better mileage (GPH) with little loss in speed----DAMN.
