<< Lancair Builders' Mail List >>
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<--->>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
First time I heard of EAA was when my flight instructor told me what the initials stood for: "Everyone's An A------". He went on to explain how chapters are usually widely diverse groups of military veterans, rich hobbyists, and those who live-to-fly. As a member I got to see this in action as my chapter split up. While Lancair builders are also diverse, our interests and building experience give us much more in common.
An obstacle to a virtual chapter is that the majority of the work would fall on the one person who maintains the site. As it is now, Marv does the work voluntarily, and hopefully most of us contribute to Marv to make it a worthwhile hobby. But how could you formalize this as a chapter paying most of its dues money to a chosen member? The only person who could decide how much dues would make the job worthwhile is Marv. If Marv ever dropped out, how would the chapter decide between different people wanting to take over who might ask for differing amounts of dues?
If EAA ever wanted to support the formation of virtual chapters, there is a nice model of what could be done. AOL was in partnership with Flying magazine. It had an online forum (unfortunately now discontinued) where you could participate interactively. This was separate from its aviation chat room. The forums would feature organized subjects or guests. Imagine a monthly Lancair oriented forum open to the public and afterwards moving to a chat room for a meeting and chat for as long as people had an interest. Something like this would be beyond what one chapter could do.
