In the 1st Quarter 1999 edition of the Lancair mail, there is a small
paragraph which concludes that the forward CG could be moved to 11% of MAC
without any problems.

The 235 and 320 both had the same range specified in the builder's manual,  15% to 29% MAC,  or FS 24.5 to FS 30.3.

Getting out my trusty calculator, I find that  changing from 15% to 11% MAC
amounts to a change of 1.66 inches, so this moves the forward limit from
24.5 inches to 22.8 inches.

Since I changed my engine to a IO 320 I have been operating with the CG
about 1 inch forward of the published limit (with full header tank and empty
wings)  and have noticed no problems except the range of the standard trim
setup is barely enough.  That is, at cruise the trim is nearly full forward,
and on landing it is all the way back.

It is a relief to find that I am, in fact, operating within the recommend
limits.

By the way, the maximum AFT CG that I can achieve is 28.8 inches, with wing
tanks full, two people, 50 lb. baggage, and only 3 gal in the header.
