It has long been my belief that Experimental airplane type-specific clubs, especially high-performance kit or plans built (such as Marv's LML site and the Franz's LNN), should automatically be eligible for EAA chapter standing. We act like a big chapter that meets every night to specifically discuss the type of airplanes we build and fly. The exchange of information is incredibly valuable. This is precisely what the grassroots beginning of the EAA (now the Eclectic Aircraft Association) accomplished across the broader range of homebuilts constructed in the fifties. I believe the EAA, chicken to use the word "experimental" and devoted to "sport planes" while many of us have built serious aircraft, has abandoned its role in our more complex "custom built" environment.
Even AVEMCO has recognized the general uselessness of local chapters since, as of July, one needs only be a member of the national EAA to utilize the special features of it's experimental homebuilt rider.
I would suggest we consider the chapter concept if we could find some function for the national organization which would enhance being a chapter of the EAA. One example would be the cross desemination of information. Perhaps the arrangement of special links to some crucial aircraft component manufacturers (Lycoming, Continental, Garmin, etc.) that are common to many type aircraft.
I also suggest you look at Chapter 1248 ( http://www.cyberhangar.org/ ) for an example of a recently forming virtual chapter. To me, the only problem is the generality of the chapter.
Think about it. Especially Marv!
And remember, ignore war birds, we fly as MORE birds.
I can hear it now, "More bird 1 to More bird 2, Lining up for the approach to the More bird gathering at O'Hare".

See y'all at OSH
[Good idea, Scott..... I'll contact EAA today and get some particulars
regarding the potential benefits and requirements of a virtual chapter.
It'll be interesting to hear what they have to say. I'll pass along whatever I learn later. Thanks... <Marv> ]
