Not only are you not hurting your engine, you are treating it kinder 
than your other scenario.  I run at about 85-90% power LOP as a matter 
of routine.  To extend range, I will first reduce rpms, then further 
lean if required.  As you discovered, you can get there faster by 
slowing down! <g>  I call that good engine management.
