Naturally, after having just flown off the hours on my Turbine Lancair 4P I thought it would be an excellent opportunity to improve my flying skills and enhance my understanding of the “free turbine.” I was surprised to learn that although Pilatus has installed a Torque Limiter, there is no Temperature Limiter to limit temperatures during the start process. I watched in horror on two occasions during a simulated start process when the operator allowed the engine to exceed 1000 degrees. Hence, the need for the training! For the sake of both novice and experienced Lancair turbine pilots there is a limiter available to eliminate the possibility of a “hotstart.” [for both the “D” and “E” engines]. Go to ww.vravionics.com. I would hate to see this happen to any of my fellow Lancair turbine pilots.
