I had a Bendix mag go belly up at 330hrs,
and switched to Slick mags--have 450hrs on those without problem thus far, but
have also heard that although they last longer than the Bendix, that they should
be looked at carefully around the 500hr point.
Of interest, I just switched from standard
plugs to the new Autolite Iridium plugs this past weekend, and ran the standard
GAMI engine test--compared data with the test I ran last summer with the
standard plugs. Of interest, within the limits of my setup (VM1000, all
altitude and engine parameters the same with the exception of a 15degF cooler
OAT) I did notice a 20-30degF cooler CHT with the new Iridium plugs over a broad
range of fuel flows, and a 2-3 knot improved speed at lean-of-peak operations
(no change at ROP operations). Not sure if the small difference is
significant. I've attached the excel data of both tests, if anyone is
interested.
Unison says that these plugs should last
several hundred hours (one of their testbed aircraft reportedly has been flying
the same plugs over 400hrs and counting. We'll see.

" General information (I
have no idea where it came from) would have us believe that Slicks should be
seriously looked at every 500 hours. "
