I agree completely with Bill.  On my 290 I used Skyport Probes and they ran from the lowest point at BL50 to the top of the Rib at the dry bay.  I also had fuel from the dry bay to the tip and found that the gage performance was very acceptable without running the probe to the end of the tank.  I also run without a header tank and it works very well.  If you run direct from the wing tanks make sure that you create a sump area with a flapper valve like the Lancair IV does to prevent unporting of the pickup.  Also use a fuel selector that DOES NOT have a both position.
