As far as I know, the only 2 potential speedbrake options for the Legacy are provided by Precise Flight (available thru Lancair) and Aero Options from Bill Maddox. After researching both of them including a long and interesting phone conversation with Bill Maddox, I decided to go with Aero Options although, as usual, I felt there were pluses and minuses for each. Bill confirmed that motors on the Aero Options units extended out to the sides beyond the extent of the pockets molded into the Legacy wing but indicated that work was underway on a kit at Lancair to install them for a customer. I had already closed my wings at the Builder's Assist workshop at Lancair and was fairly sure that such modification would involve cutting into the fuel bays. I checked with Mark Mahnke and he strongly confirmed that the only reasonable way to undertake such a modification would be before closing the wings and even then, it is not a minor undertaking. He did indicate that they were going to do it at the factory for at least one customer who wanted the Aero Options brakes. I then contacted Vern to order the Precise Flight brakes in early December. He indicated that they were not yet available for the Legacy. I then called Precise Flight to see when they might be available and was informed that they were the same as used in LIV and that 6 sets had been sent to Lancair the previous day. I called Vern back and filled him in with what I had learned and he indicated that, while he believed the brakes were different than those used on the LIV, he would check on the status for me. I checked with Vern again on the Friday before Christmas and he informed me that the brakes are, in fact, different for the Legacy and that they still are not available nor is there an expected date of availability. While talking with Bill Maddox, he indicated that he intended to modify his brakes sometime in the future to mount the motor in a vertical orientation such that they would then fit in the Legacy pockets. He did not have any idea when the modified designs might become available. Bottom line is that if you have already closed the wings, Precise Flight seems to be the only realistic option but they are not currently available (Precise Flight will only sell you brakes for a Lancair thru Lancair). Aero Options brakes MAY be an option if you have not closed the wings yet and are willing to modify the pockets into the fuel bay to accomodate the motors. Aero Options may be an option in the future if the design is modified as mentioned by Bill. Since I suspect that several of the people mentioned in this post follow the LML, they may be able to clarify things better if I've gotten any of it wrong or things have changed.
