I'm curious as to this as well. I'm thinking that the canopy would actually open a 'bit' and then stay in that possition. I've heard of someone [might even have been Lance] back when the parrelle bar style canopy's were used, that his canopy unlached.. lifted off the rails ~2" and just stayed there... he had to land w/ it like that.. is that possible?  It was said that the canopy of the older Lnc 2's had ~ 200 lbs lift off the canopy...  old wives tale??
