It has been a great airplane. There is one last area that needs attention, now 400TT. It has a low level not really all that bad but decided rumble that emanates from the nose wheel area. I took the gear doors off and flew with it and the rumbling is worse. I don't see any areas of vibration damage, cowl contact, and so on. The TSIO 550, 3 blade Hartzell has GAMIs, prop dynamically balanced, and it frankly runs rather smoothly. I feel it in my feet, mostly, and since the rest of the airplane is so smooth, I sometimes fixate on it. Sometimes over the Rockies or Lake Michigan it may be fatiguing. I take others on the plane and they don't notice it at all like I do, but it is there. It tends to diminish <160 KIAS and > 240 KIAS. I did enlarge the cowl opening when I built the plane to oblong openings, with about 25% more area, per F. Morenos sketch. Cooling has never been a problem, in fact with the gear doors off, the cooling is even better, but the plane loses about 3 KIAS. The nose gear light is hooked up to the door and the doors opens slightly at >230 KIAS. I had a gear door bolt (the round headed one) break once over the Rockies with a loud bang, so I don't over tighten the link to avoid that happening again. Does anyone out there have any experience with this issue? If so, what solutions are available? Michael D Smith msmith@cervicalspinespecialists.com
