Jeffco Tg is 122F. If I remember correctly the wing panel in question was
painted red. Wouldn't hot day skin temperatures far exceed the HDT for this
resin? Would that lead to bond failure?
We used 100% Hysol to close our wings on a IV, mostly because of the time
it afforded us. Slow Jeffco wasn't Lancair approved at that time. We were
building for a V8. We switched to the Walter. We decided to redo the wings for
more fuel. We carefully removed the bottom skin with a couple of heat guns. We
were told we could have made an oven to heat the whole wing and remove the skin
when the temp got just right! We were worried that we stood a chance
of ruining the whole wing in the oven. Replacement skins were $2600. Didn't even
have to calculate the cost of replacing the whole wing.
What a miserable job. the skin did not want to come off easily. Half way
through the process, we realized the good news was we had done an excellent job
closing this sucker out! On reclose out, again, we used 100% Hysol. "Buttered"
both surfaces with a thin coating. Mixed flox at the prescribed amount. Mounded
the flox mixture high in the center tapering to the edges. Worked great the
first time, we're confident with the second close.
